Toward the end of last week, I wrote a small list of hopeful predictions that I had for this year’s E3 showcase, and while not all of those (or many of them really) were realized, I wanted to take a moment to list out, now that E3 is wrapping up, what I’m just all-in on and what I’m cautiously optimistic for, but excited to play nonetheless. It’s Friday evening, I have family coming into town tomorrow, but I can’t help but to be excited about what’s supposed to be coming down the pipeline at E3 this week.
For those of you that are unaware, E3 is a major showcase involving video games, near exclusively (you’ve been reading this blog long enough to know that they will pop up now and then). But E3 isn’t just a convention about video games—it is the convention about video games. Every year, every major developer, every major publisher, all of the big names and some of the small ones, gather together in the LA Convention Center to show off not only what will be coming out over the next year, but what will be coming over the next two or three years. E3 is HUGE (if you’re into that sort of stuff) and usually, in the week leading up to all of the press conferences and unveilings, I like to talk to friends of mine about what they think, and what I think, will be shown off this year when it all gets going: what games will be there, what won’t, what this company will do to edge itself ahead of the others, and who will have everyone with a fistful of dollars, shoving money into their computer screens.
This year was no different, and since I have plans to write up a couple of posts next week about what I’m most excited about after this E3 has passed, I wanted to take a moment to lay out some ideas for what I would like to see most. This isn’t necessarily what I think will be there, but more so, given a wishlist of probable inclusions, what would I like to show up. (more…)
Welcome everyone to the top ten! We’re at the point in the list where the games are ever the more difficult to place, where difficult decisions over what entry and why have to be addressed with almost every item here. Expect to be either surprised, outraged, or thoroughly satisfied at the majority of the choices from here on out—there probably won’t be much of an in between.
Let’s go! (more…)
Five down and fifteen to go!
When you’ve been playing video games as long as I have, it can be difficult to place your favorites. Had I granted myself a list of 25 or 30, this process would have been easier, but there’s something about narrowing down the things you love, regardless of what they are—books, movies, golfers, tire manufacturers—that is almost sort of necessary. An appreciation for something is so much smaller when it is placed on a list of “one of my favorites,” but as the #2, the #7, the #53 favorite, a sort of ownership develops over your list. Your #3 won’t be the same as someone else’s #3, nor will many of the other items present, and there’s a pride in that, in knowing that something so close to you, so much a part of who you are, is largely unique to you. You don’t get that when it’s only one of many; you get that when you define it, so without further ado, here we go, the next part’s is up! (more…)
I’ve managed on this blog to remain fairly noncommittal when it comes to posts about my “favorite” this and “the best” that. If my television show four part series that I wrapped up recently is any indication, I find it difficult sometimes to definitively say, “This is the best” whatever “and I love it SO MUCH,” in the more than likely event that I remember something I liked even more (illustrated by the fact that the series was designed to include 20 television programs and ended with 22).
But not this time! Roused by the release of the Nintendo Switch and my digging back through my old game collection, I am making a definitive “These are my top video games of all time” list. I will openly admit that I have played video games for a very long time and if I let it, this list may go on forever, but I will do my best here to narrow down (and order!) the list so as to do justice to some of the best titles I’ve had the pleasure of playing.
As the title suggests, we’ll be doing this similarly to the way I did the TV series: four parts, five entries in each part, the difference being that they will be ordered, beginning at 20, and we will NOT do any more than that! I am setting myself to a standard here. I need to do better. Without further ado, here we go! (more…)
I mentioned once, WAAAAY back when I first began writing this blog, that I’d at one point started and subsequently tapered off from writing a separate blog previous to this one. It was meant to be a space where I could share my thoughts on writing, on reading, my influences, the process, and all that was involved in all of those things; I was still in college at the time and my days were spent writing. I couldn’t escape it—but sometimes I miss those days. Adult life can be a bummer sometimes and while English was certainly no cakewalk, it was something I really, truly enjoyed.
Recently I had the itch to revisit that blog and while many of the few posts that are up are related fairly exclusively to the novel I was writing at that time, there were a couple of posts that I felt were worth sharing here. I haven’t written A LOT about the writing process or the practices that can help you write better or writing in general really, but I’ve mentioned before that I’d like to share more on that subject and this feels like a good addition. One of the things I look forward to most during the last few weeks of the year are the end of year lists, the “best of”s and “my favorite” this and that thing–as you may be able to tell from my posts here recently; what can I say? I like lists. (more…)
